چکیده

This paper is the first of a series that attempts to assess the possible health and safety risks associated with large scale CO2 sequestration in deep brine reservoirs. The approach is based on analysis of available data on the operational track record from CO2 transportation and injection associated with enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) in the US. This paper is particularly concerned with identification of the main business risks facing a company engaged in geological sequestration. Such risks include both the operational risks of capturing, compressing, transporting and injecting CO2, as well as the risk of accidental, rapid CO2 release from wells (including an analysis of blow out data from CO2 injection wells, worked over wells as well as abandoned wells). Observations of the outcomes from accidents in real pipelines and CO2 injection wells in CO2-EOR projects provide the most concrete basis to predict the future safety of the above ground operations of CO2 sequestration in deep brine reservoirs.

A model of CO 2 - flood enhanced oil recovery with applications to oil price influence on CO 2 storage costs

Geological sequestration of CO2 through Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) presents an opportunity to achieve significant emissions reductions. However, there is considerable uncertainty over the amount of CO2 that can be stored over the economic life of an EOR project. This paper presents the development of a model that provides first-order cost estimates, sensitive to key site-specific or project-sp...

Life Cycle Inventory of CO2 in an Enhanced Oil Recovery System

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has been identified as a method of sequestering CO2 recovered from power plants. In CO2flood EOR, CO2 is injected into an oil reservoir to reduce oil viscosity, reduce interfacial tension, and cause oil swelling which improves oil recovery. Previous studies suggest that substantial amounts of CO2 from power plants could be sequestered in EOR projects, thus reducing t...

Enhanced Gas Recovery with Carbon Dioxide Sequestration in a Water-drive Gas Condensate Reservoir: a Case Study in a Real Gas Field

Gas reservoirs usually have high recovery due to high mobility and low residual gas saturation, although some of them producing under water-drive mechanism have low recovery efficiency. Encroachment of water into these reservoirs traps considerable amount of gas and increases the maximum residual gas saturation, which results in the reduction of gas and condensate production. Generally, the rec...

Pore-Level Modeling of Carbon Dioxide Sequestration in Oil Fields: A study of viscous and buoyancy forces

Underground injection of carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is a common practice in the oil and gas industry and has often been cited as a proven method of sequestering CO2 (US DOE, 1999). Of all sequestration methods, this is probably the best understood, as carbon dioxide has been used in the oil industry for many years. Additionally, most oil fields have been relatively well char...
